Enjoy a good read, hot rolls at book sale

BATESVILLE, Ark. -- The annual Mabee-Simpson Library book sale begins Friday on the Lyon College campus. The sale will open at 8 a.m. and continue to 5 p.m. The sale will also be from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. April 9 and 10 a.m.-midnight April 10.

The sale will offer a variety of romance novels, fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, children's books, old and new DVDs, CDs and VHS tapes. There also will be magazines old and new, educational materials and art books.

Library staff will sell hot, fresh cinnamon rolls and coffee at the book sale.

An annual competition juried by an external artist, this show gives Lyon College students a chance to compete for monetary awards and prestige, including the coveted Presidential Purchase Award.

Lyon suffers phone malfunction

Telephone service in and out of Lyon College was disrupted since Thursday afternoon due to a faulty switch.  Crews report that they have it repaired as of Friday morning.  If were trying to call a campus number from outside, you probably encountered a busy signal.  Thank you for your patience, and please try to reach us again now that the problem has been resolved.

More than 100 students graduate DARE

More than 100 students graduate DARE

BATESVILLE, Ark. – According to Sgt. Cord Davidson, School Resource Officer and DARE instructor for the Batesville School District, approximately 100 students from West and Central Elementary Schools will graduate the DARE program.

Ceremonies will be held Wednesday, March 31 in the West Magnet Elementary Gym at 850 Hill Street. The Central School ceremony is at 10 a.m.; the West School ceremony is at 1 p.m.

The event will feature guest speakers from the Arkansas Army National Guard. All graduating students will receive DARE shirts donated by Citizens’ Bank of Batesville. Winners of the DARE essay contest will also receive a $25 Wal-Mart gift card.

This is the fifth year that DARE has been taught in the Batesville School District.

Scholarships available at Oxford American Writers' Summit

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Oxford American will offer five scholarships (including tuition, room, and board) for Arkansas college students to attend the inaugural Oxford American Summit for Ambitious Writers occurring June 21–26, 2011, at Winthrop Rockefeller Institute on Petit Jean Mountain.

"These scholarships will allow the most promising young writers at Arkansas colleges to learn from some of the best writers and editors in the nation," said Marc Smirnoff, editor of The Oxford American.  "We are pleased to be able to extend this opportunity to our home-state students."

The scholarships will be awarded to the five best student applications (as judged by the Summit’s Fiction and Creative Nonfiction admission boards) received from two- and four-year Arkansas colleges and universities.

Seniors look back, move forward at kick-off party

BATESVILLE, Ark. -- The senior gift kick-off party was March 17 and included fun, food and prizes. Seniors recorded their most memorable moments at Lyon and what their plans for the future are. Several prizes donated by local businesses were given out to participating seniors.

Each year, the senior class leaves a gift to Lyon. This year's senior class wants to raise more than $10,000 to furnish the new student union when it is built.
