BATESVILLE, Ark. — Lyon College is moving forward with plans to rebuild its student center and dining hall after a fire destroyed both in October.

Architects from Roark Perkins Perry Yelvington Architects in Little Rock spent last week meeting with students, faculty and staff to find out what they would like to see incorporated into the new building.

Ideas given to the architects included stages for performances, banquet rooms, meeting rooms, health and wellness areas, gameroom, snack bar, campus store, mailroom and lounges.

Edwards Commons, which was destroyed by the Oct. 26, 2010, fire, housed student life offices, a bookstore, Lyon Den snack bar and a game room in addition to the dining hall. The cause of the Edwards Commons fire has yet to be determined.

Students, faculty and staff also said they would like the new building to be as energy efficient as possible. Architect Timothy Yelvington said the firm would be looking at ways to lower the college’s energy bills including rain water capturing, recycling, efficient lighting, geothermal energy and solar options.

Students and administration also expressed a desire to modernize the building yet keep a similar look to the college’s other buildings.

Yelvington said architects will meet with the college’s administration to determine a final scope of work. Once that is completed, contractors will be invited to bid on the project.

L. Dickson Flake, a former trustee and long-time real estate counselor, is acting as a special consultant to the college on the buildingprojects. Flake told the Lyon Board of Trustees recently that he is hoping for a July 2012 finish date on the new campus center.

The college is also making headway on its temporary dining facility. The former Scottish Heritage building is being renovated to seat 270 students. The facility will be used until a new building can be built.

The renovation began this spring and is expected to becomplete this summer.

Currently, dining services are operating out of mobilekitchens after a dining hall was set up in Becknell Gymnasium.
