Special Olympics athletes return from Greece

BATESVILLE, Ark. – July 5, 2011 – Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Athens Greece from June 25 – July 4 was the world’s largest sporting event for athletes with intellectual disabilities, drawing 7,000 athletes from more than 180 countries around the world, 3,000 coaches and officials, 25,000 volunteers, 40,000 family members as well as thousands of spectator.  Three Special Olympics Arkansas athletes had the privilege of competing as part of Team USA and will be arriving home on July 6 on the 4:15 pm flight from Chicago on Southwest Airlines.

Competing in the sport of powerlifting, John Yates from Benton won a gold medal in the dead lift as well as silver medals in the squat lift, bench press and combination all lifts.  John has been a Special Olympic athlete for ten years and works at Civitan Services where he serves as a donation host.

Ozark Outdoor Expo is on

CLINTON, Ark. – The Ozark Outdoor Expo will be held kicks off this weekend in Clinton, Ark. at 245 Quality Drive. The Expo runs Friday, Feb. 18 from 5 – 9 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

The event features an archery contest, turkey calling and lots of food.

Registraton for Kilted Golf now open

BATESVILLE, Ark. - Mark your calendar, pull your clubs out of hibernation and start limbering your swing for the Seventh Annual Kilted Invitational Golf Scramble, on Friday, March 25 at the beautiful Course at Eagle Mountain.

This colorful four-person scramble will begin with a bagpipe start at 12:30 p.m. followed by a dinner meal of burgers and chips. All tournament proceeds will go to support the Lyon College Athletics and fund the scholarships for the Pipe Band student members. This tournament is a kick off for the Athletic Hall of Fame that is Saturday, March 26.

The inductees this year are Kirk Kelley, Patrick Kircher, Freddie Avant, and Elbert Lindsey.
