Officials fight spread of Chronic Wasting Disease

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Last month, The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission confirmed an elk was the first case of Chronic Wasting Disease in the natural state. Since then, two deer have also tested positive for the deadly disease.

While the disease can’t be contracted to humans, it is still something Arkansans should take seriously.

BATESVILLE, Ark. - After receiving a grant in February, the Old Independence Regional Museum decided to use Archeology Week as a time to allow over 1,000 students to get in free. 

Not only did the Bill Jordan Education Grant give the museum a funds, but it also included the admission of 1,200 school students and a $50 stipend for each class's bus driver during Archaeology Week. 

“We are excited to have the opportunity to provide free tours to our regional schools. The Archeology Week programs offer a hands-on supplement for classes that have studied or will study Native American culture and Arkansas History,” said museum Humanities Educator, Amelia Bowman. “Archeology is essential in understanding past cultures and this is a great way for students to gain experience.”

AGFC to hold boating course at UACCB

BATESVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) - The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is going to hold a boating education course in Batesville on March 7 and 8. 

The course will be six hours long both days, and it will cover boat classifications, registration, rules of the road, navigation and more. It is free and open to the public. Anyone under the age of 18 must have signed parental consent to attend the class. Consent forms will be available at the Nursing Allied Health Building at UACCB where the class is being held. 

Classes will start at 6 p.m. and will end at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7 and Wednesday, March 8. Attendance to both sessions is required.

Water Carnival to feature Kidzone for all ages

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The 72nd Annual White River Water Carnival Kidzone will feature a new lineup of carnival entertainment that will accommodate everyone from small kids to adults.

Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) Director of Programs and Events Jamie Beck said of the 2015 Kidzone, “This year’s Kidzone is something completely different. We have a full lineup of interactive games and rides. We are so excited to offer attractions that accommodate Water Carnival visitors of all ages!”

BATESVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) - Awards were given to the winners of the 10th Annual Chamber Golf Classic.

In June of 2015 at The Course at Eagle Mountain, 120 golfers from thirty teams competed. Teams were divided into three flights.
