Lyon named to community service honor roll

BATESVILLE — Lyon College has been named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which administers the annual Honor Roll award, recognized 690 colleges and universities for their impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice.

Programs highlighted by Lyon included the college’s annual Service Day, Free Store and Chimalhuacan Mexico Health Study and Initiative.

Lyon College Black Tie Blue Jeans Ball raises $150K for student scholarships

BATESVILLE — More students will have the opportunity to get a quality education after Lyon College’s annual Black Tie Blue Jeans Ball raised more than $150,000 for student scholarships.

More than 300 people from Batesville, Little Rock and surrounding cities and states attended the Black Tie Blue Jeans Ball, which is a black-tie gala featuring a silent auction, live auction, gourmet dinner and dancing at the Cow Palace at Chimney Rock in Concord. This is the second year for the event.

Lyon College Vice President for Institutional Advancement Jon Vestal said 100 percent of Lyon students receive some amount of scholarship.

“This year, with the help of our sponsors and guests we surpassed our $150,000 dollar goal,” he said. “The money raised will go toward the Lyon College Annual Scholarship Fund. Our alumni and friends know the quality of a Lyon education and came to support our students.”

Habitat for Humanity offers Collegiate Challenge

Collegiate Challenge is Habitat for Humanity’s year-round alternative break program that offers college students, the opportunity to visit one of the 200 host affiliates throughout the United States. Groups spend one week working in partnership with the local Habitat affiliate, the local community and partner families to help eliminate poverty housing in the area.

Lyon College is hosting a financial aid night, free to parents of local high school seniors. The informational seminar will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in Nucor Auditorium in the Lyon Building.

Lyon College Flute Choir Spring Concert

Lyon College Flute Choir Spring Concert

Hembrey to speak at Crystal Bridges

Arkansas-born artist Shea Hembrey, ’96, will give a lecture and interview at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville on Feb. 24. The event will be at 3 p.m. in the Great Hall. 

Hembrey recently presented a TED Talk titled “How I Became 100 Artists” about the catalogue for the international biennial Seek, whose inaugural exhibition showcases the work of 100 artists. However, this catalogue is completely fictional — invented by Hembrey, who created all the actual artworks, many of which were made while he was working in Arkansas.

Wests to attend Quapaw Quartet concert

The upcoming West Endowed Concert will be the first one attended by Dr. Dan C. West since he and his wife, Sidney, left Lyon College in 1988.

Dr. West was president of Lyon (then Arkansas College) for 16 years. He and Mrs. West established the string concert series in 1981.

The Quapaw Quartet, the resident string quartet of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, will perform in the annual West Endowed Concert on Friday, Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bevens Music Room at Lyon College.
