More than 70 Counties seek applicants for Single Parent Scholarships
SPRINGDALE, AR (Nov. 21, 2011) - Single Parent Scholarship Funds throughout Arkansas have hundreds of scholarships for the Spring 2012 semester available for single parents in more than 70 of the state’s 75 counties. In particular, scholarships are abundant in Calhoun, Drew, Howard, Lee, Nevada, Phillips and Woodruff Counties.
The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (ASPSF) is the private, nonprofit corporation, which is the umbrella organization for county funds providing scholarships to single parents throughout Arkansas. The Single Parent Scholarship Funds make it possible for single parents to go to college, raise their kids and make ends meet while earning a degree. In fact, a comprehensive ASPSF recipient follow-up study completed in 2010 revealed a 92 percent retention and graduation rate among its application recipients. The scholarship amounts vary from county to county as do the eligibility requirements and deadlines. Interested applicants should visit http://aspsf.org/students_spscholarships.html, click on their county of residence and download the application form. Instructions on completing the application and where to return it are included in the application.
“Our scholarships can be used to offset the costs of tuition and books or pay for transportation, utility bills, doctor visits and daycare,” said Ralph Nesson, executive director of ASPSF. “Our goal is to remove any obstacle that would keep a parent from attending college and earning a degree so she or he can build a firm foundation for the family.”

About ASPSF
The ASPSF is a private, nonprofit corporation governed by a 21-member board of directors representing Arkansas' racial, economic and geographic diversity. The goal of the ASPSF is to assist poor single parents to complete their post-secondary education in preparation for skilled employment, and our strategy is to work at the county level to organize affiliate scholarship funds operated by local residents and provide on-site assistance with all phases of affiliate development. The ASPSF offers seed grants to new affiliates and annual matching grants to existing affiliates.
Currently, affiliate organizations representing 70 counties in Arkansas administer Single Parent Scholarships to deserving single parents. As of October 20, 2011, these affiliates awarded a combined total of 28,818 scholarships worth $16 since 1990. A comprehensive recipient follow-up study completed in 2010 revealed a 92 percent retention and graduation rate, the highest in ASPSF’s history to date.
