Upgrades planned for Batesville storm sirens

BATESVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) - The Batesville City Council is preparing to upgrade their tornado sirens after some failed to go off during a storm last week.

Officials from the city and Independence County said they're aware of numerous sirens that haven't worked for years. They have been relying on a phone alert system, but only 3,000 residents are signed up. That's less than 10 percent of the county.

The Batesville council expects upgrades to cost between $15,000 and $25,000.
