BATESVILLE — The Lyon College Education and Adventure Program (LEAP) is a finalist for $10,000 in the Polartec Made Possible College Challenge.

LEAP students submitted a video for the contest and were chosen as one of four finalists. The other finalists include Princeton University, Skidmore College and Northeastern University.

Voting begins this week on Polartec's Facebook page. The video with the most votes wins the $10,000 prize. You can vote once per day. Voting ends Feb. 1.

Lyon College Outdoor Recreation and Education Director Scott Dirksen said winning the contest would be huge for the program.

"It would mean everything to us," he said. "We could provide equipment for students that otherwise we wouldn't be able to afford."

Dirksen said if Lyon's program wins the contest, he would use the money to further develop student leadership training opportunities and buy water equipment including canoes, paddles and lifejackets.

LEAP was in its first semester of existence when its office and equipment were destroyed by fire in October 2010. The program has been in the process of purchasing equipment to replace the items lost in the fire.

LEAP, which was established in the fall of 2010, involves recreation facilities, trips and outdoor-themed for-credit courses. The college recently installed a bouldering wall, disc golf course and hiking and biking trail as part of the outdoor program.

The Made Possible College Challenge is one way Polartec supports college outdoor programs and in turn, encourages students to get outside, gain valuable leadership skills and pass along the ethics of environmental stewardship.
